An AICD is a small device that is put into your chest to help regulate an irregular heart rhythm or an arrhythmia. It contains a battery and a small computer that monitors your heart rate, which delivers small electric shocks to your heart at certain moments. Doctors implant ICD in patients having a life-threatening arrhythmia or risk of sudden cardiac arrest, in such case the heart suddenly stops functioning. The main part of ICD is a pulse generator, which generates electrical impulses and corrects irregular heartbeats.

Before the procedure, your doctor may ask you to stop all the medications, over the counter drugs and the drugs which interfere in blood clotting like aspirin etc, you should not eat or drink anything after midnight on the day before your procedure. A procedure of ICD implant is minimally invasive, anesthetist will give a sedative and a local anesthetic, to make you drowsy & numb your chest area. The doctor makes a small incision and places the device in a pocket of skin on your chest, most often under your left shoulder.

Average Length of Stay

The average length of stay for a patient in the hospital may be 1-2 days. If the implant is done by surgical method on general anaesthesia the hospital stay may long up to 5 days. The procedure generally completes between 2- 3 hours of time. The patient has to stay in the country and revisit the doctor for follow up treatment. What is the rhythm?

You need to avoid certain objects to interfere with the device function like security systems, MRI machines, power generators, etc. Keep mobile phones at least 6 inches away from your ICD.

When can I start driving after ICD implant?

The American Heart Association discourages driving for at least 6 months after surgery. This gives a chance to assess whether you faint or not after you receive electric shock from the device. If you don’t faint you can resume driving after 6-12 months.
